“Building Analysis” examines and documents the qualities of Bjarke Ingels Group’s (BIG) 8 House by using analytic and synthetic strategies of documentation. This includes a set of building plans and sections, axonometric drawings, and diagrammatic constructions.
After a thorough analysis of 8 House, it can be noted that the building is a distortion of a rectangular shape that creates an intersection in the center of the structure. This intersection bisects the building into two halves, each enveloping a void on both sides. The building consists of multiple levels and layers that shift throughout the building, rather than remaining as block-like spaces. Some of the levels shift outwards or inwards to create paths alongside the courtyards (the voids) inside the structure or along the perimeter of the building. These spaces may also shift vertically—the right side of the building has been elevated while the spaces on the left are lowered. The passageways and paths connects these spaces together to create a circulating gesture throughout the building. The sloped paths, layered levels, shifting elements, and connectedness of the building helps create the dynamic nature of 8 House, which are highlighted in the drawings. |
