“Analysis of the Familiar” introduces analytical methods of drawing, diagramming, and notation through a series of drawing studies of a familiar, everyday object—door hardware.
After carefully studying the geometries of the hardware—its angles, curves, and measurements—a set of elevations and sections were drawn to show the hardware in both its static and moved position, allowing us to see the series of changes that occurs on the hardware’s exterior and interior. The drawings also reveal the interaction of the hardware parts, how they turn and move, and how they change in response to one another. Additionally, hand drawings were incorporated to show how the hand or body engages with the hardware. All of these drawings were then combined into a hybrid drawing to establish the range of movement that the hardware undergoes as it transitions from a static to operational object. |
