CONTEXT:
This lamp shade is completely made of recycled corrugated cardboard. The design takes advantage of the materiality of the cardboard - by stacking numerous layers of thin strips of cardboard, the corrugated interior is revealed and creates a textured, perforated screen around the light source. The final product consists of about 400 individual layers of stacked cardboard. By cutting the cardboard in different angles, this also changes the directionality of the openings within the corrugations, allowing for opportunities to create moments of shadow and to direct light in other directions. The play between light and shadow creates a sense of balance and harmony within the design of the lamp. Rather than a standard light bulb, this project utilizes an LED tube light bulb. This reduces the number of light bulbs needed to illuminate this tall floor lamp. This allows the structure to filled with a consistent lighting source that stretches across its full length, which also becomes diffused in all directions in the room.
